The church of St Peter, South Somercotes, is known as the 'Queen of the Marsh'.

Its five-bay nave and chancel arch are of the Early English style; the tower is Decorated and the screen and font (carved with the emblems of the Passion) Perpendicular.

It is now in the hands of the Churches Conservation Trust.

St Peter's is one of very few churches in this part of the county with a spire.

The long nave is flanked by 5-bay early thirteenth-century arcades with round piers with octagonal abaci.

The screen in front of the chancel dates from the fourteenth-century, restored in the nineteenth.

Wall-mounted memorial to Thomas Bennett Freshney, born 18 September 1843.

The inscription says that he died on 21 January 1906 "shortly after his return home from America where he had been acting as judge at the great International Show at Chicago".

The church tower dates from around 1350.

The recessed octagonal spire has four pairs of ogee-headed lucarnes.
